The Marital and De facto Separation Study

Marriage or De Facto separation can be extremely stressful and often causes significant emotional distress. It has also been reported that the separation process plays an important role in the development of suicidal behaviours. However, little is known about what causes the most distress and at what point during the separation process. This information is crucial for the development of appropriate support for people who are going through separation.

Child Support: Parents split as they do the sums

"A lot of the guys have nothing left," says a sole parent support worker. "And they get blackmailed for more money if they want to see their kids." Justin Dowd, a family law specialist from the Sydney firm Watts McCray, says reactions to the changes are split evenly down gender lines. But he says men will pocket only half as much as the women lose, due to the family tax benefit changes. He believes the changes are an improvement. "The old system became a motivator for people to seek or oppose children spending more or less time with the other spouse," he says. "The new calculation is meant to allow people to make more flexible arrangements with their children. The intent of the changes is good. Only time will tell."

Why have kids if you don't look after them?

I suspect my views on the obsession with putting children into child care might infuriate some mothers. I really can't remember a time when child care carried such a huge chunk of political and social sway. I'm mystified as to why the first thing many people seem to do once pregnant is to put the child's 'name' down at the local child-care centre. Why have children if you don't want to look after them?

Women aren't better - just equal

The idea that women are innately more moral than men, and less greedy and aggressive, has many champions, and I used to be one. Men have used the notion since time immemorial to put women on a pedestal and out of the main action. Certain feminists have also espoused the argument that women's "nurturing" and "intuitive" qualities equipped them to be better business executives, better people managers and political leaders  just better all-round than men.

These days I think that sort of feminism is silly.

Protest Against DOCS - Chaos as man climbs Sydney Harbour Bridge

He said he was staging a "peaceful protest" against the Department of Community Services (DOCS). "If that draws attention to the fact DOCS is a failed department that's letting our children down, then I have achieved my goal." "This is a peaceful protest. It's to give a voice to little people," he said. "Most fathers or mothers that are victims of this sort of stuff have not got anyone to turn to."

Territorians shirk child support payments by failing to provide cor…

A Federal Government agency says more than 2,000 Territory residents aren't paying or receiving the proper amount of child support.

The Child Support Agency figures show it has the wrong contact details for about 15 percent of its clients.

The Agency's Bill Volkers says there's a number of reasons why people are slipping through the net.

Bill Volkers from the CSA said
There are some people who are avoiding their responsibilities but we find in the vast majority of cases that people do want to do the right thing. Often it's just a matter when they've moved, they have list of contacts like electricity and telephone and all those sorts of things and they just forget to notify the child support agency.

Divorce undermines health in ways remarriage doesn't heal

New research shows that when married people become single again, whether by divorce or a spouse's death, they experience much more than an emotional loss. Often they suffer a decline in physical health from which they never fully recover, even if they remarry. Healthwise, it's not better to have married and lost than never to have married at all. Middle-age people who never married have fewer chronic health problems than those who were divorced or widowed.

Court orders writ to be served via Twitter

"I think this is a landmark decision to issue a writ via Twitter," said Dr Konstantinos Komaitis of Strathclyde University's law faculty. "You are creating a precedent that people will be able to refer to. It only takes one litigant to open the path for others to follow," said Komaitis, a lecturer in IT and Telecommunications.
