NSW - Time to have the little children suffer no more

When the body of a boy was found in a suitcase in 2007, and a girl was found starved to death in her home, the State Government could no longer ignore calls for an inquiry into the child protection system.

This week the Premier released a radical plan to reshape the way the state responds to children in need of protection and help, accepting virtually all the recommendations of the Wood…

Parents kept from children get new hope

Parents illegally kept away from their children by aggrieved former partners would have a new government agency to turn to for help under recommendations by the Family Law Council. The council, the Federal Government's advisory body on family law matters, has called for the establishment of a Child Orders Enforcement Agency, along similar lines to the Child Support Agency. The agency would respond to complaints from aggrieved parents denied court-ordered access to their children, determine whether the other parent had shown "serious disregard" for the court orders, and help institute legal action in the Family Court to ensure compliance.

Shared Parenting - The best outcome for children - Family First policy

Senator Steve Fielding is a member who needs to be re-elected.

The Family Court is not a good place for Australia's children. In almost 98 per cent of cases, a child will effectively lose one of their parents after a Family Court decision, creating a stolen generation of children. Old pre 2006 statistics showed only two and a half per cent of Family Court orders allow children to have equal time with both parents, after a relationship breakdown. Read The Family First Media release to gain a better insight into Family First policy.

Child Support: Parents split as they do the sums

"A lot of the guys have nothing left," says a sole parent support worker. "And they get blackmailed for more money if they want to see their kids." Justin Dowd, a family law specialist from the Sydney firm Watts McCray, says reactions to the changes are split evenly down gender lines. But he says men will pocket only half as much as the women lose, due to the family tax benefit changes. He believes the changes are an improvement. "The old system became a motivator for people to seek or oppose children spending more or less time with the other spouse," he says. "The new calculation is meant to allow people to make more flexible arrangements with their children. The intent of the changes is good. Only time will tell."
