Fun but inexpensive activities

encouraging kids to enjoy time with the "spends time with"

All too often it is so expensive to get time with your child/ren that when you do get to have that time, resources are so tapped (financial and emotional) that we can forget how to have fun with our kids.

Some inexpensive ideas are:

- make playdough together

- colour in together

- plan a meal, buy all the ingredients and then cook it

- blow bubbles

- check out all the nearby parks and take a picnic (even if it's some Maccas on the way)

- make a cubby house and leave it up for the stay

- jigsaw puzzles

- make some artwork (paint leaves and press them onto cardboard or canvas)

- go for a bush walk

- make a boat and see if it will float in the bathtub

- get some bikes and go bike riding (excellent if you are suffering a little depression)

- rent some dvds and make popcorn together

- look up basic science experiments on the net and do some together.

- take a train ride, even if it's just up the line and back

- go to a big library and get out books for the week, cds and so on

- check out the local bunnings for kids hardware courses

- paint some ceramics together

- go to the YMCA

- try indoor rock climbing

I'm sure there are lots of other cool ideas that other folks could add.

Water fun

Great ideas Artemis.  Thanks.

Also, in this hot weather, some water fun can be good.

Buy a water pistol (or two) and let children squirt you (and each other) - outside.

And kids love throwing water at and over Dad (and probably Mum).

Mine likes to throw water over me after (even when) I've mown the lawn and am hot and sweaty or squirt me with the hose.

And there's also those little pools to lay in and cool off.  (Just watch that there are no mishaps and drownings … it's the ex-OHS&E Officer in me!)
Mine like going to local reserves and driving my car.

When you are swimming down a creek and an eel bites your cheek, that's a Moray.

Water Restrictions

Oh Dad4life, we are on level 5 water restrictions here in Qld - I look forward to when we can do water play again...

If you have water restrictions in your area, going to the pool is cheap and fun, kids love the water plus its good for you health wise and you could take a packed lunch also to save costs

I have a few more I would like to add...During the school holidays the kids can also attend a Bunnings workshop where they build stuff. Apparently they are fun. Another option is to join PwP (Parents without a Partner). They have family events every weekend. The good thing there is that it is a forum for the kids to make new friends.
