New to all this

Hi, I have spent the last six months paying tens of thousands of dollars only to get interim orders based on my sons mothers wishes until a family report is prepared (I am applying for equal shared care).  As I have come to the end of the road financially, I am going to have to self-represent.  I am not a professional man by any means (labourer) and am finding it quite overwhelming.  I want to know how others in my situation got the ball rolling?  I have all the material (counsel submissions, affidavits) done and paid for but until trial am unsure what to do and how to prepare.  If anyone can give me any pointers or advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
Hi atomicdad. The first thing is to read the site. See what material relates to you.

Consider joining the SRLs on this site. You will receive targeted advice and access to a secure part of the site, which is not accessible by non-members.

My partner self represented with help from this site, up until the final hearing where we engaged a solicitor and barrister toward the end. Others on the site have self represented with very good results.

It comes down to how determined you are to do the reading required and the level of your writing skills.

You need to look through the law act, paying attention to 60CC. You need to consider how judgements relate to your case.

Search on here and on AUSTLII to find judgements and information.

The next big thing is the family report. Read the many, many posts on this subject. Good luck.

Artermis thanks so much for your reply.  I will take on board your suggestions and get started that way.  I have applied to join the SRL's so hopefully my membership is accepted.  I am so thankful I found this site, I am sure its an absolute lifeline for so many out there.
The join process takes a little while, but is worth the wait. Not everyone who requests membership will be granted it for a variety of reasons.

Whether you gain membership, I get the feeling you will be up to the task of Self Representing.
