The controversial new Family Court fees come into effect today.

It will now cost $220 to get a parenting order, $700 for a relationship property application and more than $900 for a relationship property hearing.

There will however be no charges for protection orders, and people can ask for the fees to be waived on the grounds of financial hardship.

The Ministry of Justice says the new charges will ensure the Family Court remains accessible for the children, families and vulnerable people who most need its help.

Minister for Courts Chester Borrows says it will also provide an incentive for people to deal with their relationship problems outside of court.

But Brian Gardner from the National Network of Stopping Violence says people who have money will be able to have their day in court, while those with less will just struggle on.
