New Mr Men character is French and rude

By Katy Hastings

A remake of the classic children's TV programme Mr Men risks ruffling feathers across the Channel after a new character was created, Mr Rude, which speaks with a French accent.

The character even invites children to pull his finger - and then breaks wind. Mr Rude features in an internet advert for the new programmes, which begin on channel Five this month, telling viewers how rude he can be and then blowing a raspberry.

Other characters have regional accents from around the UK while Mr Rude is the only one with a foreign tongue.

The show's makers, Chorion, claim it is not meant to cause offence but the English view of the French lacking a little politeness is well known.

A number of updates have been made to the characters which were created by Roger Hargreaves more than 40 years ago.

Mr Strong used to be a square but now he is a triangle with bulging biceps, while there are new members of the cast such as Little Miss Daredevil, who wears an Evel Knievel-inspired red, white and blue crash helmet, white high heels and a jetpack.

The original characters were inspired by Mr Hargreave's son Adam when he asked his father 'What does a tickle look like?', thus creating Mr Tickle.

Since his father's death in 1988 he has taken over the drawing of characters and continues to work with Chorion to "ensure they remain faithful to the original version".

Actor Simon Callow, who narrated the series, said: "Narrating Mr Men was highly entertaining. The programmes are fun but full of wisdom."

The series will first go out on February 25 and is expected to be sold to countries around the world. An American station has already snapped it up.

A Five spokesperson said: "Mr Men is a comedy show for four to seven-year-olds.

"The fact Mr Rude has a French accent is meant to be light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek and no offence to the French people is intended."

A spokesman for the French ambassador to the UK refused to comment but a source at the French Embassy said: "It is obviously meant in a light-hearted way but it won't improve Anglo-French relations."

Mr Men first came to fame through the little square storybooks which sold more than one million copies in the first three years in the early '70s.

And when a BBC television series came about in 1975, narrated by Dad's Army star Arthur Lowe, it enjoyed an even bigger success.

In 1981 the Little Miss characters were introduced and a total of 175 animated programmes were eventually created. Since the launch in 1971, an estimated 100 million Mr Men books have been sold in 22 countries.

Happy Birthday Artemis - I hope you had lots of chocolate and good things!

When you are swimming down a creek and an eel bites your cheek, that's a Moray.
I even got a Mr Happy from the golden arches.

Flowers, txts, lunch out (oysters killy! and champas). Then partner had made a card of a picture of him and the boys on a magnet.  :)  :P  :)
