These are the major changes to the Child Support payment system.  It comes into affect on July 1.

The Australian Government is changing the Child Support Scheme to ensure it meets the best interests of the children, and to better balance the interests of parents, reflecting the fact fathers now have a greater role in raising their children.

The legislation covering this issue previously was 20 years old.

Community expectations have changed and parenting styles have also changed so the new scheme also aims to better reflect the costs of children.

The new, more flexible agreements for child support mean that a different formula will be applied to parent's incomes and lifestyle to assess their responsibilities.

Changes to child support

Both parents' incomes taken into account

The costs of raising children will be better accounted for

An amount for self-support will be excluded from both parents' incomes, that's $18,000 each for both mum and dad

Better recognition of shared care

Children from first and second families will now be treated in a similar way.

Families will now receive a minimum child support payment and there will be new help with re-establishing yourself after you separate.
